There's nowhere in the world like Yellowstone National Park when it comes to fishing. There are a hundred lakes and a thousand miles of streams. Cutthroat, grayling, and mountain whitefish (all native) and rainbow, brown, brook, and lake trout are the seven varieties of game fish that live in Yellowstone. The best flyfishing runs from late June through October, although conditions are often good in March and April before spring runoff. Fishing permits are required and available at all ranger stations, visitor centers, and Yellowstone Park General Stores. No state fishing license is required in Yellowstone National Park.
There is no best time to fish Yellowstone Park. Each month offers its own style of best fishing. From late May through the end of June, the best places to fish include the Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison. Both Yellowstone and Trout Lakes open on June 1. In July, all waters become fishable in the Park, including the small streams. Insect hatches are at their peak in July, and this is a favorite time for dry-fly fishermen. August is the best time for lake fishing in the Park, and October is the best month to come if you want to catch the large migrating fish in the Madison and Lewis Rivers.
